Sunderland College has launched a new programme which offers funded support to pharmacies based within the Local Pharmacy Committee area. The bespoke programme focuses on the roles of counter assistants and delivery drivers, and uses Skills Funding Agency subsidy to support recruitment, training and professionalism within these areas of the community pharmacy sector. Paul Stafford, employer relationship manager at Sunderland College said: “Pharmacy professionals, whom we have contact with, agree that in their view the support on offer would be of interest, siting the need for training in all aspects of employment and recognising the important role that the counter assistant and delivery driver fulfil, while also supporting job satisfaction and motivation.” Sunderland College offers fully funded Apprenticeships to candidates of all ages who do not have a degree, either as new recruits or ‘in-service’ staff. There is no employer contribution required for candidates and some wage incentives of up to £1,500 per new staff member (under 24s) are available for up to five staff. The college also provides a free pre-selection service for counter assistants or drivers in the region, where a pharmacy may be recruiting. Paul added: “Counter assistant and driver recruitment needs may not be large or indeed current; however we can support one branch for their vacancies or a group approach when appropriate.” Vocational training is also available without charge in areas that augment the patient relationship, while also recognising the need for accuracy, confidentially and understanding of GSL medication. These services are free and feedback from businesses is that they get a better calibre of applicant, and feedback from the candidates is similarly positive.
