Use plenty of sun screen...

I went to a really useful meeting of the North East Pharmacy Forum recently.

The speaker, Dr Keith Freeman, the Senior Dermatologist at City Hospitals Sunderland gave us an interesting account of the way that prolonged sun exposure can damage skin leading to sunburn, prickly heat, actinic keratosis and cancer...

Dr Freeman asked the audience what amount of sunscreen he should take away for a 10 day holiday to Spain?

We all got it wrong!

He advised that you need to use about 35g of at least factor 15 cream every hour while sunbathing to ensure adequate protection (and even more if swimming)...so about 200ml per day per person is required - a sobering wake-up call for us all to recommend and use plenty of sun screen!

CPD is a necessary component of being a registered professional.

It allows the reader to see that the registered pharmacist, or technician, is keeping up-to-date and learning new information - and so is in a better position to provide pharmaceutical care to patients and the public.

It isn't ideal, and many have criticised the concept of recording CPD - as pharmacists actually learn so much in each day of practice, it's sometimes very difficult to decide what to write down or find the time to do it. But find the time we must, because every 5 years your CPD will be called in for assessment and there will consequences if registrants are found lacking...

At the time of writing this blog, many of my pharmaceutical friends have had their CPD records called for review and some are frantically writing up records from pieces of evidence...please ensure that you keep doing CPD as you could be next!
